Leveraging Football to Promote Tourism

The Volta Regional Football Association (VRFA)  has not only fostered the growth of football in the region but has showcased the rich cultural heritage of the people of the Volta Region through its newly introduced “Trophy Tour”, promoting tourism through football.

This is the first of its kind, a worthy partnership between the Volta Regional Football Association (VRFA) and the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).

The route for the trophy tour journeyed through the beautiful landscapes and rich history-beckoning sites of the Volta Region as the team traveled through.

Notable attractions along the trophy tour route include the Ave Dakpa Crocodile Pond, in the Akatsi North District when the glittering Trophy visited Nugata FC.

Kpetoe, in particular, is famous for its vibrant kente weaving traditions that have been passed down through generations, and is a border town to Togo as the train stopped by to visit Kpetoe Diamond FC.

The trophy tour team was utterly surprised and moved by the story of women in Mafi-Dove, located in the North Tongu District, who have faced substantial challenges related to childbirth and accessing healthcare outside the Dove community.

The team was told “no woman can bear a child in the Dove community, you either go outside the community give birth, and return or you give birth, lose your life, or be plagued by a disease.”

This discovery was made en route to Aveyime, home of Aveyime Soccer Wonders FC.

The trophy also passed through the popular Sogakofe Bridge, also known as the Lower Volta Bridge, a 650-meter-long bridge on the N1 Highway connecting Accra to Aflao, over the Volta River when the trophy train headed to Fievie from Aveyime to visit West African Football Academy, WAFA SC.

The first day of the trip began in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region passing through various attractions such as Mount Afadja, one of the highest mountains in Ghana, and Tagbo Falls, a waterfall near Mount Afadja located in Liati Wote, approximately 27 kilometers east of Hohoe.

Amedzofe

Other beautiful attractions included the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, home to Mona and Patas monkeys, and Amedzofe, a mountainous settlement known for its four natural wonders, the Ote Falls, Mount Gemi, (a somewhat prayer hub for most religious people), its pleasant climate, and therapeutic landscapes.
